Washoku is Japanese for "Japanese Food", but also means "harmonious meal". This is because the traditional way of eating in Japan focuses on enjoyment of a wide variety of small plates with diverse ingredients all centered around Japanese rice and soup. These dishes are all served at once on tray called a zen. Japanese meals are not only balanced in flavor, but also have a greater variety of nutrients than most single dish meals.
